They say that money doesn’t grow on trees but there’s a tree in the middle of Honolulu that is making over 400,000 dollars a year for its owners by just being a tree—a very beautiful tree.

Hitachi Tree 2

If you live in Japan, then there’s no doubt you are familiar with the tree in the picture above. It is the symbol of Hitachi Ltd., the giant electronics company based in Tokyo, Japan. Hitachi started using the tree as a corporate symbol back in 1973, and it has appeared in the company’s TV commercials and print ads since then.

The Hitachi tree, as it is endearingly called, is located in Moanalua Gardens in Honolulu, Hawaii. The park was part of a private estate when Hitachi originally got the rights to use the tree’s image for a payment of US$20,000 dollars a year. However, after the last heir to the estate passed away the property was sold to a real estate company called Kaimana Ventures. Under the new contract with Kaimana Ventures, Hitachi agreed to pay US$400,000 per year until 2016—four million dollars in all. Though I can’t confirm it, I’m pretty sure this makes it one of the top earning trees in the world.

The Hitachi tree is a monkeypod tree which is native to tropical regions of Central and South America. This particular monkeypod tree was brought back to Hawaii from Africa as a seedling and planted by Samuel Mills Damon over a century ago.

If you are looking for something to do on your a last day of a vacation in Hawaii, you should visit the Moanalua Gardens on your way to the airport. The park is only about ten minutes from Honolulu International Airport. I can’t think of a better way to end a vacation in Hawaii than with a relaxing stroll around the park.

Yamazaki Bread Company driver handing out bread to stranded motorists

A recent heavy snowfall in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan left many motorists stranded on highways and at highway rest stops. Fortunately for the motorists in one area, there was a kind-hearted truck driver from the Yamazaki Bread Company to help out. The driver was stuck in the same blizzard unable to make his deliveries. That’s when he took it upon himself to hand out the bread in his truck to the people who were stranded in his vicinity. By the end, he only had an empty truck but he was able to provide a much-needed meal to many cold and hungry motorists.

One of those grateful recipients posted some photos of the driver passing out bread along with some words of thanks on Twitter. Soon the tweet went viral with many people praising the driver’s good deed.

Believe it or not, there were some negative comments too. Some claimed it was a ploy by the company to polish its image.

In my opinion, some people are just too cynical. Sometimes a good deed is a just good deed and we should leave it at that.

This is not the first time for the company to be in the news for helping out. After the March 11, 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, Yamazaki Bread was one of the first companies on the scene delivering free food to people in need.

Five Japanese scuba divers have miraculously been found alive three days after they went missing off the coast of Bali.

Local fishermen discovered the divers clinging to a coral reef. The five women divers were almost 20 kilometers from where they and two other women went missing.

The women could not be rescued by the fishermen due to rough waves. Shortly after their discovery, one was rescued by helicopter and the others were picked up by a rescue boat. Unfortunately, officials have no news of the other two divers.[tippy title ="(UPDATE)" header=“off”] Body of one of the divers recovered by Indonesian search team. Read more here.[/tippy]

The seven women began their diving trip under good weather conditions on Friday from Nusa Lembongan, a nearby island. They were experienced divers—all with more than 50 hours diving time. The skipper of their boat said there was a heavy downpour while he was waiting for the divers. The water became cloudy during the heavy rain and he moved the boat about 100 meters away from where they were expected to resurface.

When they did not resurface at the appointed time he searched the area for about an hour before reporting the incident to authorities.

There were reports of heavy rains in the area on that day. Such sudden downpours are very common during the monsoon season, which runs from October to April.

The women appear to have no serious injuries and are currently being treated at two hospitals in Bali.
