A famous painting was sold at an auction in New York City. A bidder paid $450 million for it. This is the highest price ever paid for a piece of art.

The picture was painted by Leonardo da Vinci who lived in Italy about 500 years ago. The painting is called “Salvator Mundi”. That’s Latin for the Savior of the World. It is a painting of Jesus.

It was the last painting of Leonardo da Vinci that could be bought. That’s one reason it was so expensive. Who bought the picture? We don’t know. It’s a secret.

The painting has mysterious origins. Nobody knew where the painting was for over 50 years. Then in 2005, it was bought at an auction in Louisiana for only $10,000. That’s a real bargain.

Do you think it's OK to spend so much on painting?
